We’ve all been there. You’re at a networking event, a dinner party, or standing in the coffee queue. Someone leans in, gives you that polite smile, and asks the inevitable: "So, what do you do?"
You take a breath. You prepare yourself. You say the magic word: "I’m a fractional [CFO/CMO/CTO/HR Director]."
And then, it happens. The 'Bewildered Expression'...
The eyes glaze over for a microsecond. They tilt their head slightly, like a dog trying to figure out a magic trick. They nod, they mumble something about, "that’s interesting," and you can practically see the gears grinding as they try to categorise you. "What's one of those?"
The term 'fractional' has exploded in popularity recently in business, yet the general public—and even many still within the corporate world—are either unaware or seem to view it through a lens of confusion.
"I'm a Fractional CFO. I spend my mornings explaining to tech founders that 'vibes' aren't an accepted currency on a balance sheet, and my afternoons looking for the other 4/5ths of my salary."

Redefining the Value Proposition
For those of us living and breathing this life, "fractional" isn't just a job title; it’s a strategic delivery model.
It’s about high-level expertise, massive impact, and the agility to provide C-suite or leadership-level strategy to businesses that don’t have the budget, or the need, for a full-time, round-the-clock executive. We aren't "doing a fraction of the work"; we are providing 100% of the leadership required to hit the objective.
Yet, explaining this often feels like trying to explain the internet in 1995. You get the, "Oh, so you work part time?" response, which feels a bit like being told you don't want a 'proper job'.
The Art of the 'Fractional Elevator Pitch'
The challenge is that we can sometimes do a good job explaining the what, but we might often stumble on the why.
If you want to move past the bewildered expression, you have to stop describing your contract type and start describing the value creation. Instead of saying, "I’m a fractional COO," try:
"I bring the 'big company' playbook to smaller businesses, just on a schedule that fits their current stage of growth and budget"
It moves the conversation away from how you are employed and toward the value you unlock.
So how do YOU answer the question?
Some of us use metaphors (a lawyer on a retainer), some use analogies, and some just dive straight into the business impact.
My fellow fractional professionals ....
How do you answer the "What is fractional?" question without getting the bewildered stare?
What is your go-to 'elevator pitch' that clarifies the why to your listener?
